Dreads do not make your head itch. An itchy scalp is a symptom that points to a maintenance issue.
The two common reasons why people with dreadlocks have itchy scalps are:
1. Residue From Soap And Hair Products
Dreadlocks are hard to rinse and when they are not properly washed, they tend to hold residue better than loose hair. The residue that collects is the primary cause of irritation and itching of the scalp. To avoid this problem, always rinse your dreads well after washing and use a dread soap that leaves no residue when it is rinsed away.
2. Improper Washing Of Dreadlocks
Over or under-washing dreadlocks will cause an itchy scalp.
When you have dreadlocks, the scalp and roots require regular washing to remove dirt, dust, grease, and dead skin cells. Since dreads cannot be combed regularly, washing is the next best solution. If you forge to wash them, the grease that builds up will make your head itch.
Over-washing causes dryness as the moisture is stripped off with each wash. The result, once again, is an itchy scalp.
The balance lies in keeping the natural oils of the hair while washing away dead skin cells. This can be achieved by diluting the dread soap with water to get a light wash that does the job.
3. Under-Stimulation Of The Scalp
A lack of stimulation results in itching in the scalp. Washing and brushing normal hair stimulates the scalp. Brushing is a great way to exfoliate the scalp and a hair pick is a useful tool for this purpose. For a massage-like experience, simply guide the tips of the comb across the scalp to exfoliate and stimulate the surface.
