Dread wax is often necessary to hold new locs together.
The rule of thumb with using wax is… a little goes a long way. Use just enough to hold loose hairs down and keep your dreads together.
How To Apply Wax To Your Dreads
Start with a pea-sized blob of wax and warm it between your palms before applying it to your hair. Work it between your hands to soften the wax, especially if you live in a cooler climate.
Apply the warmed-up wax to the top of your dreads and work your way down to the roots. Palm roll your dreads as you work your way down and lock in the wax by blow-drying your locs. Using a dryer eliminates the white residue of wax that is often visible on darker hair.
How Long Should I Use Wax On My Dreadlocks?
Dread wax adds nutrients to your hair follicle to condition and strengthen. It helps to tighten and lock new dreads. The wax holds the loose knots together and encourages the locs to tighten from the inside out.
As your dreadlocks mature, you will need to use the wax only occasionally.
Use the wax once every few months if your hair tends to be coarse or curly. If your hair is finer, you may need to wax it more frequently until your dreads reach the desired tightness.
Apply wax to your dreadlocks only when they need to be re-tightened or if they have become scratchy and dry.
