The scalp is the foundation for a head full of healthy dreadlocks. A lot of care is given to the health of dreadlocks and not enough attention is given to the scalp.
When the process of shedding old cells on the scalp is interrupted by your locs or the environment, issues like dandruff and dryness occur.
Here are 5 tips to help keep your scalp (and in turn your locs) nourished, stimulated, and healthy.
Hydrate Your Roots
Keeping your locs hydrated is essential. Keeping the scalp hydrated is just as important.
Due to the parts in your hair formed by locking your roots together, parts of the scalp are exposed to the elements. Avoid dryness by using a moisturizing spritz for your hair and scalp in between washes.
Avoid Stripping Shampoos
Regular cleaning of the scalp is important to its health. Use a shampoo that is free of sulfates for your weekly cleanse and the clarifying shampoos once a month.
To remove the salt deposits from heavy sweating, rinse your hair with cold water after your workouts.
In the summertime, use a chelating shampoo each time you take a dip in the swimming pool to remove the chlorine from your hair. Don’t forget to deep condition your hair when using a strong cleansing shampoo.
Protect The Scalp From Excessive Heat
When using a blow dryer for your locs, direct the heat away from the scalp and direct the airflow down the hair shaft. Too much heat from styling tools causes flaking on the scalp due to parched skin cells.
