Winter is almost here. The seasonal change can be harsh on your dreads. Stepping outdoors can cause your dreadlocks to dry out, develop frizz, or even crack at the tips.
Even if you stay indoors, the dry air from central heating systems affects your locs. If you don’t pay extra attention in the harsher winter months, they will become dull, dry, and brittle.
Avoid these problems by following these simple steps to keep your dreads healthy in the dead of winter:
Moisturize Daily
Do not skimp on the moisturizing oils by going light. Heavy oils like extra virgin olive oil work wonder on dry dreadlocks.
Make your own daily moisturizing spritz spray by using a mixture of 3/4 aloe vera and 1/4 natural oil like jojoba, almond, or olive. Spray it on your locs each morning to nourish the hair and seal in the moisture from the Aloe Vera juice.
Add a few drops of essential oils to give it a pleasant scent.
Go Undercover
Cover your hair with a hat or cap. Cold wind tends to make hair dry and crunchy. Use a hat with a satin or synthetic lining to prevent the moisture from escaping out through the fabric. Or, wear a scarf under the hat for extra protection from the cold.
Condition Regularly
Use a thick conditioner every time you wash your hair in autumn and winter. Apply coconut oil to your dreads and leave it overnight under a plastic cap or head wrap.
