Dreads that are not mature are likely to appear flat at some stage of their growth. This is to be expected especially in the morning after sleeping on them all night.
If the knots are formed well, the new dreadlocks will slip back into shape and eventually grow round again.
In the meantime, you can whip them back into shape by palm rolling them round when you notice the flatness.
Palm-Roll And Clockwise Rub Your Dreads
The knots should be packed pretty well to make it difficult to spread the dreads apart when you palm-roll locs using your fingers. You may need to fix the knots if you notice them coming apart and going back to being straight. Waxing the dreads will not help because the knots have already come undone. Wax can be used to compress and tighten existing knots in your locs.
If the knots at the root have unraveled, using the clockwise rubbing method will fix the problem.
Re-Backcomb Your Locs
Backcombing your dreadlocks is a technique of reverse combing that helps your hair to knot up and tighten. You do not need to comb your dread first, but if your dreads are resistant to backcombing, combing them out straight first will help. Start at the roots and comb your way slowly to the tip.
You will have to start from scratch if your dreads are now almost completely straight. You will find that certain sections need more attention than others, so it is best to section your hair and give each section of dreads the TLC it requires.
