If you recently started your locs, you’re most likely in the baby-dread phase.
Instead of fine locs, your loosely matted hair has fuzzies everywhere. It will take a few months before they start looking like actual dreads. Your dreads also have to go through an uncomfortable phase before they can grow into locs.
Here are 3 growing pains most people experience when they get dreads for the first time:
1. An Itchy Scalp With Baby Dreadlocks
Products used during the locking process leave your scalp feeling dry and itchy. Residue, grime, and grease produced by the hair can results in an unpleasant itch in the scalp after the first week.
If it gets unbearable, try a warm baking soda rinse followed by an apple cider vinegar rinse. Keep your locks conditioned during the day with a DIY moisturizing spray for dreadlocks.
2. A Serious Case Of Frizz In Your Locs
You might wake up every morning with an awful case of frizzles. Everybody who gets dreadlocks goes through this phase, which might last for two months or longer depending on your hair type.
Although frizzy dreadlocks can be frustrating and discouraging, this phase will pass and your hair will calm down. Be prepared to deal with frizzy locs.
3. The Wait For Dreadlocks To Mature
It takes patience and maintenance for your starter locs to transform into mature dreadlocks. It could take up to 3 months before you start getting compliments on your new hairdo. Remember, the baby dread phase is temporary and it will pass.
You just need to push through and let your hair grow.
